Westwood Elementary School

Welcome to Chillville, a grant awarded Westwood Elementary for two sensory rooms that create a multi-sensory enviroment for students in which stimulating activities and experiences are used to increase awareness and positive behaviors for individuals with sensory integration disorders or neurological challenges. We are also finding the rooms provide a quiet respite for students who need a break from the stress and mental challenges of the school day.

Serenity Cove is a garden room filled with white wicker furniture and with walls painted to replicate a majestic and peaceful garden complete with flowing stream and cattails. A bubble tube sits atop the table and a fiber optic stand changes color while you watch. A programmable moodlight can change the atmosphere in Serenity Cove. The antique rose theatre gel covering the lights presents a soft pink glow in the room. A wicker chest holds a flower match game, a sensory smell game, weighted vests and pads, lots of vibrating critters, and plush bunnies, squirrels, backyard birds, frogs and a chipmunk. An oversized frog, ladybug, and caterpillar delight all that enter.
Since the opening of the sensory rooms, they are in almost constant use. The reaction to the rooms has been very positive by students and staff.
Seaside Escape is a peaceful escape from the outside world. The sounds of the ocean emanate from the varied DVD collection of Beaches, Tropical Waves, Ocean Tranquility, etc., shown on the flat screen TV. Students can sit on the comfy loveseat or wallow in the velvety beanbag while they relax. The fish in the real life aquarium are fun to watch. A bubble light that changes color mesmerizes and relaxes a sensory learner. The shelves are filled with games, ocean animals, tactile balls of all shapes and sizes, and most anything the tactile learner would need to meet his sensory needs.
Those who like to touch and feel will also like to explore the pirate's chest filled with the ocean's bounty of stuffed animals.
A sea lion, whales, lobster, crab, dolphins, and leopard frogs all await the touch of a child's hand.

Based on the research of the founders of Snoezelen, a multi-sensory room developed in the 1960's in Holland, we sought to develop Serenity Cove and Seaside Escape into rooms that enhance concentration, alterness, calmness, and a general awareness of the surrounding world.
